Eric Perrodin has formally submitted his resignation as Compton city attorney on Dec. 8.

“I submit this resignation voluntarily and with full understanding that, under Section 505 of the Compton City Charter, it creates a vacancy to be filled by the City Council in accordance with the Charter and applicable law,” wrote Perrodin.

On the Nov. 5, 2024, ballot, Compton voters passed Measure CA. This measure calls for the city attorney position to no longer be elected but appointed by the Compton City Council.

The City of Compton and former City Attorney Eric Perrodin have reached a settlement resolving multiple legal actions between the parties, according to court filings made this week in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Notices of settlement were submitted Thursday and Friday before Judges Randolph Hammock and James Chalfant, concluding the litigation shortly after Perrodin resigned from his position as City Attorney earlier this month. The terms of the settlement have not been publicly disclosed.

The legal disputes stemmed from disagreements that arose in 2024 related to the City’s 2024–25 budget, including funding allocations for the City Attorney’s Office and differing interpretations of the scope of authority between the City Council and the City Attorney.

In its court filings, the City alleged that former City Attorney Perrodin asserted authority to determine which matters were placed on the City Council agenda and cited concerns regarding the prosecution of certain municipal offenses, including building code violations and public safety-related issues. The City further alleged that between June 2024 and March 2025, Perrodin utilized city staff, office resources, and public funds to pursue litigation against the City Council and city officials.

The City’s legal action, filed March 10, also asserted that city time and resources were used in connection with the lawsuit while Perrodin continued serving as City Attorney.

Perrodin filed his own lawsuit in June 2024, which later evolved into a taxpayer waste action. In his filings, he sought court intervention to prevent what he described as illegal expenditures or misuse of city funds. Perrodin contended that the City Council exceeded its authority when adopting the 2024–25 budget by reassigning City Attorney’s Office staff and by delegating certain legal authority to the City Manager, who is not a licensed attorney.

According to Perrodin’s filings, these actions violated the City Charter by undermining the independence of the City Attorney’s Office, which he argued was intended to serve as a check and balance within city government.

Eric Perrodin was elected to a two-year term as City Attorney in March 2024. His resignation and the settlement of the related litigation bring the legal dispute between the City and its former attorney to a close.
